{"id":328,"date":"2017-01-19T18:58:06","date_gmt":"2017-01-19T23:58:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.haverford.edu\/mi3\/?page_id=328"},"modified":"2017-01-19T18:58:06","modified_gmt":"2017-01-19T23:58:06","slug":"entrepreneurship-and-access-to-finance-in-se-europe","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.haverford.edu\/mi3\/projects\/entrepreneurship-and-access-to-finance-in-se-europe\/","title":{"rendered":"Field Study: Entrepreneurship and Access to Finance in SE Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">What are the opportunities for Entrepreneurship in the transition economies of SE Europe?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">What are the challenges, including finance which seems to be a universal constraint for small business growth and success?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Does entrepreneurship provide opportunities to marginalized communities like the Romany?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Does development through tourism benefit local small businesses or just large foreign interests?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are just some of the questions we\u00a0will\u00a0interrogate on a field study in\u00a0Bulgaria, Macedonia and Montenegro, all transition economies that have both shared histories and diverse paths of progress. Going back 30 years, Bulgaria was firmly in the Eastern Bloc dominated by the USSR, while Macedonia and Montenegro were within Yugoslavia which had followed a &#8220;third way.&#8221; Going back even further, all were under the Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria for 500 years! Now they are integrating with the world economy and forging a small business sector that was non-existent in\u00a0communist times.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-337 lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/blogs.haverford.edu\/mi3\/files\/2017\/01\/map-300x136.png\" alt=\"map\" width=\"300\" height=\"136\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/136;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0trip will be led by Professor Shannon Mudd, from the Department of Economics. We have a great set of partners across\u00a0all three countries, including academics, government officials and these three organizations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Trust for Social Achievement\" href=\"http:\/\/socialachievement.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trust For Social Achievement<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; a Bulgarian NGO whose programs include entrepreneurship training and finance to the marginalized Roma community. \u00a0They have just launched a program to provided loans for purchasing land underneath existing\u00a0homes. Karina Fortuny Baltova HC &#8217;05 is our contact!<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Horizonti - Macedonia\" href=\"http:\/\/horizonti.org.mk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Horizonti<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; an MFI in Macedonia that works with impoverished small farmers. Seniors may apply and will be accepted as space permits. \u00a0We will ask for a small contribution of $125 to help defray costs. However, aid is available to any for whom this would be a hardship. The deadline is <strong>Saturday, 4 February.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Internship Potential<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Note that you may use your travel to this region as a springboard for finding a potential internship for the summer and seek funding. Given you are already there (and have the potential to exchange your return flight), the funding required from an outside source (e.g., CPGC for Haverford students) would be reduced &#8211; which may work to\u00a0your favor!
