Democracy Debates and Candidate Conversations at the Bi-Co

In advance of the midterm elections, Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges will welcome political activists, candidates, and alumni experts to campus for two upcoming events.

To encourage the Bi-Co community of learners to dive into to the important discussions related to November’s midterm elections, both Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges are presenting events that dig into the issues confronting our divided electorate and prepare voters to cast an informed ballot.

On Thursday, September 27, Bryn Mawr College will host a panel, “A Seat at the Table? Pennsylvania Women Congressional Candidates Forum.” Moderated by Bryn Mawr Assistant Professor of Political Science Kelly Dittmar, the conversation will feature a nonpartisan discussion of gender and politics with six local women congressional candidates who are running in November’s election: Bibiana Boerio (D), running for Pennsylvania’s new 14th Congressional District; Pearl Kim BMC’01 (R), running for Pennsylvania’s new 5th Congressional District; Susan Boser (D), running for Pennsylvania’s new 15th Congressional District; Chrissy Houlahan (D), running for Pennsylvania’s new 6th Congressional District; Madeleine Dean (D), running for Pennsylvania’s new 4th Congressional District; and Mary Gay Scanlon (D), running for Pennsylvania’s new 5th Congressional District.

On Saturday, October 6, Haverford College will host “Midterms 2018: What’s at Stake?” Moderated by Associate Professor of Political Science Zachary Oberfield, alumni representing a broad range of political perspectives will gather to discuss and debate the state of democracy in America on the eve of the midterm elections. Co-sponsored by Haverford’s Multicultural Alumni Action Group (MAAG) and the student organization HaverfordVotes, the event will feature author and journalist Juan Williams ’76, former senior advisor to both the White House and Congress Ron Christie ’91, and former congressional candidates Adem Bunkeddeko ’09 and Molly Sheehan ’07.

“A Seat at the Table? Pennsylvania Women Congressional Candidates Forum” will take place 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in Goodhart Main Theater at Bryn Mawr College. Sign up for updates, reminders, and more information about the event.

“Midterms 2018: What’s at Stake?” will be held 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Marshall Auditorium in Roberts Hall at Haverford College. The panel will be followed by a voter registration drive from 1:00-1:30 p.m. in Roberts Hall and an alumni social from 1:00-2:30 p.m. in Haverford’s VCAM building.
