For more than 40 years, the CCPA has played matchmaker for students and alumni sponsors for a weeklong workplace experience over the College’s winter or spring break. An externship is different from an internship in that it is a much shorter engagement (one week versus a whole summer or semester) for professional shadowing rather than hands-on work. And as such it is a much less committal way to test the waters of various lines of work. “Career exploration takes many forms, and shadowing is a great way to sample a career or industry that you are considering without going all-in for a full summer, or saying yes to a full-time job,” said Director of Career Engagement and Initiatives Jennifer Barr. “For liberal arts students, it’s incredibly helpful to shadow someone from the same type of educational background, and witness how alumni transfer their academic skills to the workplace.” The process begins with students pouring over the CCPA’s list of alumni and parent externship sponsors. It can also provide valuable opportunities to network with professionals in your chosen field. You’re likely to only job shadow for a day or just a few hours, so you must make the most of your time. Remember these tips to get the maximum benefit from job shadowing. Make Sure You’re Clear on the Details Before you arrive for your job-shadowing stint, be clear on its details. Miscommunication before you start job shadowing can reflect badly on you. Remember to ask where you’ll job shadow, what time you should arrive, and what you should wear. Required dress depends on the workplace; suits may be appropriate in one environment, while smart casual dress might be more appropriate for another. Research where you’ll job shadow and how long it will take to get there. Allow extra time in case there’s bad traffic or you get lost. Do Your Research You’ll be much better prepared to job shadow if you’re informed about the company you’re visiting and the person you’re shadowing. The organization’s corporate website is a good place to start....

Now Accepting Applications for the CCPA’s Winter 2018 Externship Program!

Photo: Yongjie Jason Gao ’20 with Extern Sponsor Jesse Ehrenfeld ’00  Figuring out what you are interested in takes time, planning and initiative, but you don’t need to do it all on your own.  The CCPA and the College offers many opportunities to explore careers: resources to read about careers that interest you, opportunities to watch and talk with people who work in those fields (through a job shadow, informational interview, or networking event), and connections and advice on getting an internship, volunteer experience, or a job.   What is the extern program? As an extern, you will have the opportunity to job shadow alumni/ae in their place of work. Externs observe and talk with sponsors and their colleagues. In most cases, you will participate in the normal routines of the sponsor, following your host throughout the workday, and in some instances, working on special projects. Most of the extern sponsors are alumni/ae; there are some parents and friends of the College who also serve as hosts. The CCPA’s Extern Program is a beneficial experience that gives students a chance to explore different career options by gaining a firsthand glimpse into a field of interest. Selected applicants are matched with one of Haverford or Bryn Mawr alumni the students listed as preferences in their application.  By job shadowing professionals in their workplace, you can begin to explore your interests and see what a typical day is like in a particular job. The advice and guidance you’ll receive from alumni in this shadowing experience will help you identify potential career options.   Apply for our Winter Break Extern Program! Applications are due Thursday, November 1.
