Tech giants Amazon, Google, and Facebook will be on campus starting today until Friday for networking and recruiting events. What advice will you take from this article? Tech Visionaries Share Their Best Career Advice With Interns By Lucas Matney |  Lucas Matney@lucasmtny  | 2015   “Someone in this room, I am very confident is going to found a multi-billion dollar company and change the world in a big way, and 90 percent of the people in this room will end up with a career they somewhat regret and will wish that they had gone in a different way.” – Sam Altman Sam Altman, President of Y Combinator, was the final speaker of the evening at Internapalooza, and despite the fact that the high-energy group of a couple thousand Silicon Valley interns had been sitting through nearly two hours of speakers, they were listening on bated breath. The intern event, held at Parc 55 in San Francisco, had attracted representatives from some of the biggest names in the industry: Apple, Airbnb, Palantir, Andreesen Horowitz and dozens of others. It also hosted a group of speakers, consisting of billionaires, founders, CEOs and venture capitalists, that imparted their wisdom to the next generation of Silicon Valley leaders that were in attendance. Advice ranged from the cliché to the profound, but all of the interns I spoke with said that they were walking away from the conference with...

CCPA Summer Series 2017: Jared Turner ’19 Interning at the Ardmore Initiative

CCPA Summer Series 2017: Jared Turner ’19 Interning at the Ardmore Initiative

Whitehead Internship Ardmore Initiative, Ardmore PA By: Jared Turner ’19  Featured photo from Destination Ardmore  This summer, I will complete an 8-week internship at the economic and community development firm, Ardmore Initiative in Ardmore, Pennsylvania. The opportunity arose after completing the necessary steps in the CCPA’s Whitehead Internship process. As I write this post, I have not actually started my internship but, I hope to provide you with information on my responsibilities for the summer and what I want to gain from the experience.   Founded in 1988, “Ardmore Initiative’s mission is to create and maintain a thriving, economically viable downtown business district for the benefit of merchants, residents, and visitors.” Moreover, my job, this summer, is to work with the helpful members of the Initiative to bring this mission to fruition.   More specifically, I have been tasked with four major areas of focus for the summer: Understanding the Stakeholders, Walk Ardmore Campaign, Physical Survey of the Ardmore Business District and a Survey of Business/Property Owners. Ardmore Initiative is made up of an Executive Committee, a governing Board and then ran on a day-to-day basis by the Executive Director, Christine Vilardo and Assistant Executive Director, Marie Suvansin. In regard to “Understanding the Stakeholders,” I will meet with current and former members of the Initiative, as well as interviewing businesses and writing spotlights on these businesses.   Additionally, I will work with the other members of the Initiative to coordinate the Walk Ardmore Campaign. This campaign is aimed at bringing people to the Historic Ardmore District and in turn spurring foot traffic to the businesses within Ardmore. In conjunction with...
First Ever Career Closet “Shopping Day”

First Ever Career Closet “Shopping Day”

Last April, the pilot of the CCPA’s Career Closet Open House brought over 90 students to our office for a day of “shopping.” We were thrilled and overwhelmed by the generosity of the Haverford Community, who contributed to the project as we collected items during a two week donation period.  With close to 500 articles of clothing, it was more than we ever expected! Starting at 10 am on a Friday, students were able to browse and try on various professional clothing. Because of the enormous amount of donations, each student was able to take up to 5 clothing items. Students were excited  and our halls were filled “shoppers” as soon as our doors opened (considering Havertime plus 10 minutes). The goal of the event was to help students build their professional wardrobes, and guarantee their confidence and success as they embark on their summer journeys. We plan to do this event again in the future, although we may have cleaned out the entirety of Haverford community’s wardrobe 😉  Thank you to the staff who helped in our promotion and planning of this event. This truly felt like a community effort and we could not have done it without you!            ...
Externships: A Glimpse At Your Future

Externships: A Glimpse At Your Future

Jenny Ahn ’17 shadowing Lisa Healy BMC ’73, a senior production editor at Simon & Schuster in New York City. Today we were featured on Haverford College’s homepage with the following article written by Tania Bagan ’18. Thank you to Tania and the passionate students and alums of Haverford and Bryn Mawr.     This winter, four dozen Fords shadowed Bi-Co alumni at work as part of the College’s long-running externship program, which gives students a firsthand peek at potential career options. For more than 40 years, Haverford College’s Center for Career and Professional Advising has run an externship program that connects current Haverford students with a wide network of alumni for a non-time-consuming way to get a firsthand look at professional field of interest. Every winter and spring break, students may devote a anywhere from a few days to two weeks of their vacation to shadow Bi-College alumni of all different occupations—from medicine to the arts, business to law—at their place of work. Director of Career Services Amy Feifer, who co-directs the program, believes externships are successful because they provide students with the kind of hands-on, personal job experience that is not accessible in a classroom setting. “The program offers students a deeper look at a potential field of interest,” she said. Not only do those students gain direct work exposure through the brief externships—most of which last around four days—but they also often receive valuable advice and guidance from the alumni and other professionals in the workplace. This past winter break, more than 40 Haverford students shadowed alumni around the country. One of those students was Maurice Rippel ‘19, who spent a week...
