Belgium in Pictures

This past weekend,  I went with friends (mostly Astronomy PhD students here at the Sterrewacht), to Belgium. We spent Friday night and Saturday morning in Antwerp, and Saturday evening and Sunday in Brugge. Two very different, but both very beautiful places to explore.

Fewer words, more pictures:

Immediately after stepping off the train in Antwerp, I was overwhelmed by the incredbile architecture.

One of many fantastic statues / buildings seen on our first night in Belgium

The group, from left to right : Mattia, Francisco, Stephanie, Marissa, Karimu, Maya (me), Matteo and Mark. Between all of us, there were 5 nationalities and 4+ languages represented.

Waffles, of course! Over the course of the weekend, we all happily sampled the stereotypically wonderful Belgian goods-- waffles, chocolates and beer

Brugge: "The Venice of the North" (?) according to a tourist map we found. Not sure about that statement's truth, but the canals were stunning.

Brugge at night was lovely. Very romantic and not as crowded with tourists teeming through the streets.

On a ceiling, in several languages: "In their ring, the canals of Brugge embrace each tint and tongue. These gates are open to every road and the kindly sea welcomes all travelers. He who crosses our thrones today knows he is linked to countless others."
