Explain yourself, Lee!
Hello dear reader, I am Lee Flaherty, Haverford class of 2012, and I have a most exciting internship this summer. I will be working for the company Seawater Greenhouse (Australia) Pty. Ltd., to construct, operate, and offer ideas for improvement of the first large-scale commercial seawater greenhouse operation. Observation in the nascent stages of the greenhouse will provide a platform to generate such ideas for improvement.
Understanding the theory behind the seawater greenhouse requires knowledge of engineering, horticulture, physics, economics, and chemistry, at the very least; I will explain it more in some of my posts. However, theory is not reality, and to get a sense for the reality of the situation I will be present for the planning and construction stages of the greenhouse, through to operation. My goal is to figure out as many possible ways to improve the efficiency of an already efficient system, with a current emphasis on the use of alternative pollinators in the greenhouse.
I have spent a considerable amount of my free time this past year in the hope that I’d get to where I am now, and I will tell you a new piece of my story weekly. I have a lot to share, and if you follow my blog I guarantee that you will learn a multitude of new facts in a plethora of subjects. Brief casual updates will be posted throughout the week, along with exciting pictures to supplement your word-weary eyes. Hopefully, through this weblog of my summer, I can offer friends, family, colleagues, professors, and any other readers a vibrant and dynamic picture of my summer at the edge of South Australia’s outback.
