Dr. Sylvia Earle at the Academy of Natural Sciences

Last night, the lab took a trip to the Academy of Natural Sciences to see Dr. Sylvia Earle present the lecture, “Our Fate and The Oceans Are One.” Dr. Earle is an Explorer in Residence at the National Geographic, an oceanographer, marine conservationist, and inspiring speaker. After her talk, graduating seniors Sarah Choyke ’10, Maryann Tekverk ’10, and freshman Sarah Harrison ’13 spoke with her and obtained signed copies of Dr. Earle’s new book, “The World is Blue”.
After graduation, Maryann is headed to graduate school at Scripps Institute of Oceanography and Sarah is headed off for adventures unknown, but you may find her here. Sarah Harrison will be spending the summer at the Smithsonian Marine Station in Fort Pierce, FL with Dr. Valerie Paul. She’ll first be taking a trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands to collect cyanobacteria that she will later analyze in the lab to determine how they use chemical defenses against herbivores on the reef.
