This past Monday, we hosted an event at Southwark to honor the support of the Garces Foundation, which is a major source of funding for the Puentes education program. The Iron Chef himself, Jose Garces, as well as his wife Beatriz and the mayor’s wife, Lisa Nutter were all in attendance. Catering was provided by Tequila’s restaurant, as well as the families we work with! In fact, everyone thought that the homemade mole tacos were catered. I was so happy to see even our first graders eating shrimp ceviche! I spent most of the time behind the scenes, shepherding kids in and out of the ceremony.
One of the most exciting things was that reporters from Al Dia, Philly’s Spanish language newspaper, ABC 6, and the South Philly Review were all present. We are so excited that Puentes has been in the press recently!
You can read the article in the South Philly Review here (with a few quotes from yours truly.) I am so excited that the reporter included an essay written by one of our sixth graders.
