Anna Russell ’14 transformed the Skate House on the Duck Pond into an intimate theater last week for a staging of her senior thesis production of the play “The Island” by South African playwright Athol Fugard.
The 1973 play, which attacks the South African system of apartheid that was in place when the work was first performed, follows two prisoners in an island prison camp—one soon be released and the other in for life—who are rehearsing for a performance of  “Antigone.” (Fugard collaborated on “The Island” with actors John Kani and Winston Ntshona, who went on to perform it on Broadway.)
Russell, who majored in theater at Swarthmore, received support for the production from the Hurford Center for the Arts and Humanities’ E. Clyde Lutton 1966 Memorial Fund and Swarthmore College’s Theater Department.
Collence Nyazenga ’14 and Danica Harvey SC ’15 starred.
