Hi Cecily - this sounds like a great project - I had never thought that urban gardens might actually have a negative health impact because of residual metals from the past, but that makes obvious sense. My question is, once you find that a garden does have high Pb levels, what can/will be done to correct the situation? Are raised beds with new soil enough, or do you have to dig down and remove the top layer of the old soil to really get a fresh start? Or are you mainly hoping to provide new data so people have something to work with in figuring out what to do next? Keep up the great work! - Tom

Hey Andrew, thanks for your questions! We will be processing all samples together, so no testing will be done until the 3rd week of June. For these first 2 weeks, Ari and I are going around collecting soil. As for the testing, the we are putting the same sample through several different tests. The plant-available metals test is doable at BMC. For the whole soil analysis (how much of what metals) and whole plant analysis, we will send the samples off to separate labs since these tests require more corrosive chemicals.

Cecily,

Your project looks awesome. I can't wait to hear more and see some pictures along the way! Two quick questions: what were the results from your first tests? Do you actually get readings immediately or do you have to send them to a lab?

Best of luck,
Andrew
