My perspective -In the east the community of families ( caste system ) is the dominant social fabric. We, in the west view individuals and friends as community builders.

On a timeline to measure progress the caste system is very very old and deep rooted, where as dating (with the goal of finding a compatible mate) is relatively a newer invention to meet a need.

Education level now is the dominant decider during the screening of the community pool (not just the caste) and more and more inter caste marraiges are accepted now.

Since the prospect of the indian women's self employment is (so hopelessly) tied to the family ( starting with marraige and all its shades as you have observed), how can she ever succeed as an individual?

I think, Since the Indians are great assimilators, your generation will certainly blend the two "old" and the "new".

Watched Hillary Clinton mention SEWA

I was hoping to read your dad's perspective.
