On the Road Again…
Hey Everyone,
Me and Nick have been spending the last few days in the provincial capital of Wuhan seeing the sights and visiting some friends from Huangshi. It’s been a great time and I’ll post a video about pretty soon. We will be coming back to the States tomorrow on Sunday August, 3rd and should arrive later on that same night. I will post one more video to this blog talking about the trip as a whole and about our recent experiences.

I’ve always wanted to go to China, however, the idea of being in another country with people that don’t speak English gives me an uneasy feeling. Is English popular over there?

The answer to your question is a little bit complicated. Yes, English is ‘popular’ in China. Every student starts to learn English in Middle School or earlier and continues to study it until after college. English is also seen as a key skill in getting a job in the new more global China. To what degree this translates to common proficiency, however, is unclear. Despite the many years of English students may have taken, many are able to say only a few words of English because of the heavy grammar and reading emphasis put on by the middle and high schools in China. Another major factor is the location in China. If you are in Shanghai and speak only English, you should be fine. If you decide to go to the boonies of China, I would advise you to be a little more careful. Regardless, I think it’s doable.
