A sewing party.

A million thanks to Rebecca Church, who lent us two sewing machines and figured out how to make the pouches.
We got our prototype for the heart gel pack pouches from Nao last week, and started out the third quarter festively with sewing parties Tuesday and Wednesday nights. With five borrowed sewing machines, amazing expert sewers, and regular folk to do the cutting and gluing, we pulled it off. We thought we might need a third sewing party (who doesn’t love a party?), but Jane and Hannah stayed late into the night Wednesday to finish off 55 pouches.
Thursday night I was all set to return the sewing machines. But Facilities Management was closed and couldn’t drive me, so I had to return them by wheelbarrow. Giant wheelbarrow. If you ever need one, check the shack behind Gummere. If you were one of the people who saw me huffing across campus Thursday night dragging a wheelbarrow decked with sewing machines…now you know why.
Come by our Comfort Station in the Campus Center, Thursday 11:00-4:00, to see the fruits of our labors.

The canopy has been rented for the comfort station. Thank you Taylor Rentals. Thank you James for making me realize the party rental place was Taylor Rentals and not Taylor Reynolds, like the number in physics. Thank you Dorothy for making everything happen at the Campus Center (that’s where all the comfort will be next Thursday).

We need you to sew heart pouches with us. We need you to eat food with us. We need you to have a sewing party with us in James House Tuesday and Wednesday night (Tues 7-10, Wed 8:30-10/after We Speak).
Whether you’ve been sewing all your life or have never stitched a stitch, come. We can’t sew, but we’re going to try. (There will be sewing machines. If you have one you can lend to us, let us know.)
We are sewing heart pouches for the comfort station we’re hosting with Nao around March 25th. We will also screen some of Nao’s films. She’s done some pretty great stuff—dressed up her dog Fufu as a water buffalo; dolled herself up in a huge blond wig, climbed a ladder, and sung “America the Beautiful”; traveled around the country dressed as Ronaldo McDonaldo and demanded a free hamburger. The list goes on.
Conclusion: Come to James House. Sew with us.
Does anyone else have any powerful or curing objects they’d like to contribute to the comfort station? Bring ‘em back to the Ford after spring break!

I am currently raiding my house for “curing” tchotchkes for the comfort station. My mom is sad to part with her little toy bee and her flashing disco ring from my cousin’s bat mitzvah, but my dad is thrilled to get rid of all the junk in our house. Who’s going to get the green whistle, the rosary beads from my trip to Greece in 5th grade, or my orange star-shaped glasses from kindergarten?
Yesterday evening Robin and I got to talk to Nao about her comfort station while she ate her dinner and wore a Star Wars fleece hat. We spoke with her about her new innovations for the personalized comfort hearts we will be creating for the comfort station.
hey all,
glimpses of greatness were witnessed at our meeting on wendesday. hearing about everyone’s preliminary stunts and final projects in detail was both enlightening and fun! each project is totally unique, from pope.l’s otherworldly performance shoot, to jen’s remake of a fleetwood mac album, to nao’s comfort station, to harrell’s fieldtrips. especially exciting will be the flurry of preliminary stunts in the coming weeks, including mashup karaoke, giant birthday parties, the et^2 screening, and anonymous valentines. the air at haverford is getting more spontaneous and creative by the day. many thanks to the faculty, students and non-haverpeople who have assisted among friends so far!
thanks to john muse, here are some pics of the joyous event.

among friends Meeting!

Happy Eli and Ali!

We chatted with Nao again this week. We didn’t get to pretend we were in Paris, because iChat (and thus its special effects) weren’t working. But we had a very productive talk on Skype, and now we’d like to fill you in.

We couldn't play with the special effects, but Nao played with her funky hat.
Plans for the comfort station are coming along. Nao found warming heart gel packs for soothing purposes (click Read More to see). For the station itself, we want a cabana lean-to; the icon could be a red cross tilted to an X. Before Nao gets here, we’ll put together a questionnaire asking Haverfordians what their worries are. We’ll have a big sewing party to make fanny packs; Nao had the idea to make origami flowers from dollar bills and cover them with Velcro dots.
among friends is a series of four simultaneous, collaborative workshops that team contemporary artists with Haverford students and interested members of the community.
