How to make a comfort station pt. 1

Jane Holloway | March 16, 2009

Today I went down to Fabric Row on South 4th St. to pick up some materials for Nao’s talismans. Ever-trusty Liz Turner came along as my unofficial unpaid among friends photographer. Here’s what I got.

I got 10 yards of velcro at Pennsylvania Fabric Outlet. cro

Get Your Sewing On.

Robin Riskin '12 |

We need you to sew heart pouches with us. We need you to eat food with us. We need you to have a sewing party with us in James House Tuesday and Wednesday night (Tues 7-10, Wed 8:30-10/after We Speak).

Whether you’ve been sewing all your life or have never stitched a stitch, come. We can’t sew, but we’re going to try. (There will be sewing machines. If you have one you can lend to us, let us know.)

We are sewing heart pouches for the comfort station we’re hosting with Nao around March 25th. We will also screen some of Nao’s films. She’s done some pretty great stuff—dressed up her dog Fufu as a water buffalo; dolled herself up in a huge blond wig, climbed a ladder, and sung “America the Beautiful”; traveled around the country dressed as Ronaldo McDonaldo and demanded a free hamburger. The list goes on.

Conclusion: Come to James House. Sew with us.

Happy Ides of March!

Julia Ryan BMC | March 15, 2009

I just can’t help myself.

I went to a high school, actually the oldest public high school in the country, where a “classical” education was not only valued, but required. We took four years of latin (it used to be six years, then five years…) and learned all about Julius Caesar and his downfall on the Ides of March. We learned about the brothers, Romulus and Remus, and how Romulus literally stabbed Remus in the back. As much as I hate on my high school, I secretly sort of love these geeky holidays.

Here’s more geeky stuff, for your enjoyment:

Food.

Eli Blood-Patterson '11 | March 11, 2009

moldy nectarines

In his past work, William Pope.L has regularly used food as a medium. In both performance and installation work, processed foods have become symbolic of poverty, the scarcity of life below the welfare line, and of life in households where food is not consistently available. Hot dogs, mayonnaise, pop tarts, and milk are consumables that, when left in the open air, ultimately will lose their nutritive qualities. In the piece Map of the World (2002), for example, Pope.L constructed a map of the United states entirely out of hot dogs. Read the rest of this entry »
