Yesterday evening Robin and I got to talk to Nao about her comfort station while she ate her dinner and wore a Star Wars fleece hat. We spoke with her about her new innovations for the personalized comfort hearts we will be creating for the comfort station.

When John first told me about William Pope.L’s idea of mashing and contrasting E.T. and Emmett Till, the 14-year-old boy who was brutally lynched for allegedly whistling at a white woman, I thought it was interesting. I was not prepared for the anger and hurt unleashed by E.T.2, the mash-up of the documentary The Murder of Emmett Till with the movie E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial, projected onto one screen in Ryan Gym.
The discussion afterwards and the Conversations du Jour the next day made me realize how far my ignorance goes. E.T.2 stirred up extreme emotions: voices were raised, a person cried, and I simply had not foreseen it. There are some things that I just don’t get, and that upsets me.

In ET^2, we will trace the stories of two E.T. figures: Spielberg’s fictional E.T., who reached te American consciousness in 1982, and real life Emmett Till, whose violent death by lynching shocked the American consciousness in 1955. Although at first their two stories may seem entirely without connection, upon closer inspection the emotions that define these narratives draw them together.

Comments rssWhen I went to the Brooklyn Museum over winter break, my destination was Gilbert & George. Along the way, I was distracted by a modern white cubicle-type space set up in the middle of the traditional dark-lit floor. Four temporary walls encased twenty-five photographs of African Americans; flat screen TVs outside ran interviews.
The subjects ranged from Toni Morrison to Will Smith to Colin Powell. The exhibit was The Black List Project, by photographer/filmmaker Timothy Greenfield-Sanders and public radio host/former Times film critic Elvis Mitchell (the interviewer). It is on display at the Brooklyn Museum until March 29th. The Black List Project also includes a book and film component (Volume Two of the documentaries is premiering on HBO February 26th).

I saw the exhibition with my friend, and her reaction seemed to be, “Oh, a bunch of portraits. Great, now let’s move on.”
However, I think it’s important that we take some time to honor important and accomplished African Americans in our museums. We have countless paintings of old white men hanging in gilded frames. It’s about time we had some black faces.
among friends is a series of four simultaneous, collaborative workshops that team contemporary artists with Haverford students and interested members of the community.
